South Shore Opens Complex
South Shore Center hosted a ribbon-cutting of Bayberry Courts, an apartment complex designed to offer affordable housing to adults with severe and persistent mental illness, on October 24 at the new building located at 1838 Kingstown Road, South Kingstown.
The low to moderate income complex will offer 10 one-bedroom units on a supported-housing model, which offers residents independence to work on individual goals and objectives, while providing them access to a continuum of care in an integrated community setting. Residents of Bayberry Courts will be provided myriad services tailored to meet their needs, including psychiatric services, case management, health care coordination and emergency services, to name a few.
Bayberry Courts will fill a need for residents of South County, which has less affordable housing available than more urban settings. All potential residents will be required to meet specific criteria of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
That department, along with the state Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals and Building Homes RI, provided funding for the project, which was developed by Women's Development Corporation. South Shore Center operates similar properties in Westerly and North Kingstown.
